The truss manufacturer's engineered drawings showing each truss, where it goes, and how it connects. Frequently filed after the main permit as a deferred submittal.
When it applies
In the permitting lifecycle, truss layout applies during Preparation, Plan review, and Inspections. Documents commonly matter at more than one phase, and this one does.

A truss layout is the package produced by the truss manufacturer's engineer. It includes a placement plan showing where each truss sits, individual engineering drawings for every truss type, and the connection and bracing details.
Where it applies in the lifecycle
- Preparation. Included with the permit set when it is available in time.
- Plan review. Checked against the architectural and structural drawings for consistency.
- Inspections. Used at the framing inspection, where the inspector verifies that the trusses installed and their bracing match the sealed package.
The deferred submittal pattern
Truss packages are commonly not ready when the permit is filed, because trusses are engineered by the supplier after the supplier is selected. Most jurisdictions handle this by issuing the permit with the truss package listed as a deferred submittal: the package is filed and approved later, but before the framing it covers is inspected.
This is a normal arrangement and not a shortcut. The obligation it creates is real, and forgetting it produces a failed framing inspection on a job that is otherwise ready.
What reviewers check
That the truss reactions are carried by the structure below, that the connections shown are the ones the engineer specified, that the bracing requirements are on the drawings, and that the layout matches the roof shown on the architectural plans.
