US Building Permits Directory
Building permits in the United States are issued by local governments — not the federal or state government. That means the office you need depends entirely on where your project is located: a city, town, or county building department.
This directory covers 35,304 jurisdictions across all 50 states and Washington D.C. — with contact information, links, office hours where available and a brief description of how permitting works in that jursidiction. Select your state below to find the right permitting authority.
How US building permits work
The US has no national building permit system. Instead, each state delegates permitting authority to local governments — counties, cities, and townships — resulting in thousands of independent permitting offices nationwide. Some states mandate that all jurisdictions adopt a uniform code; others give localities complete autonomy over whether to require permits at all.
In general: if your project is inside city limits, the city building department issues the permit. If it is in an unincorporated area, the county handles permitting. Some states use townships or special districts as the permitting authority. Use this directory to find the correct office.
