Exposure category

Also called exposure B, exposure C, exposure D, wind exposure

A classification of the terrain around a site that determines how much wind reaches the building, and therefore the design pressures.

Exposure category describes the roughness of the terrain surrounding a building. Rough terrain, meaning buildings and trees, slows wind near the ground. Open terrain does not. The category feeds directly into the wind load calculation and therefore into the whole structural design.

The categories

  • Exposure B. Urban and suburban areas, wooded areas, terrain with numerous closely spaced obstructions the size of single family dwellings or larger.
  • Exposure C. Open terrain with scattered obstructions. Flat open country and grasslands. This is the default when neither B nor D clearly applies.
  • Exposure D. Flat unobstructed areas and water surfaces, including shorelines in hurricane-prone regions.

Why it is a frequent error

The upgrade from B to C raises design pressures materially, and the assumption that a suburban-looking site is Exposure B is wrong more often than people expect. The determination depends on terrain within a defined distance upwind, and the direction matters: a site sheltered on three sides and open toward water is not Exposure B for the direction that counts.

A wrong category invalidates everything downstream. The structural design, the product selections, and the approvals filed with the permit were all sized to pressures that were too low.

How it is determined

The engineer of record assesses the terrain in each direction, applying the code's definitions. Plan reviewers in coastal jurisdictions check this specifically, because they see the error often, and a submittal claiming Exposure B on an open waterfront site is one of the faster ways to draw a structural comment.
