Wind load calculation

Engineering calculations establishing the wind pressures a building must resist, which set the required capacity of its structure and openings.
When it applies
In the permitting lifecycle, wind load calculation applies during Preparation and Plan review. Documents commonly matter at more than one phase, and this one does.

A wind load calculation establishes the pressures a structure has to resist. The output drives the structural design and the required design pressure ratings of every window, door, and roofing product on the building.
Where it applies in the lifecycle
Produced during Preparation by the engineer or architect of record, and scrutinized during Plan review by the structural reviewer. Unlike product approvals, it does not return at inspection: what the field inspector checks is whether the installed products meet the pressures the calculation established.
The inputs that matter
- Design wind speed, taken from the code maps for the site
- Exposure category, describing the roughness of the surrounding terrain
- Risk category, reflecting what the building is used for
- Building geometry, particularly height and roof shape
- Enclosure classification, whether the building is enclosed, partially enclosed, or open
Why it matters most in coastal states
Wind load governs design in high-wind regions in a way it does not elsewhere. In Florida and along the Gulf and Atlantic coasts, it commonly drives the structural design outright, and it determines the design pressure ratings the openings must carry. Inland, gravity and seismic loads more often govern.
The exposure category error
Exposure category is judged from the terrain surrounding the site, and picking the wrong one is a frequent and consequential error. Assuming suburban Exposure B for a site that is genuinely Exposure C, because it is open or near water, understates the pressures across the whole design and invalidates the product selections that followed from it.
